While larger wheels look stylish on most vehicles, there are special considerations to be made when upgrading. When you “plus size”, or switch to 4×4 rims with a larger diameter, you’ll need to buy new tyres to match those wheels. Below, you’ll learn more about upsizing custom wheels and tyres.
Tips for Wheel Selection
The outboard and inboard positioning of TSW wheels is referred to as backspacing, and it’s important for suspension movement and clearance.
- Most tyre and wheel sellers have databases or books listing the largest wheel/tyre combination that fits a particular vehicle. It’s typically safe to use a “plus one” (a wheel 1″ larger in diameter with a lower-sidewall tyre) or a “plus two” (2″ larger diameter wheels and a tyre that has a 2″ lower sidewall).
- Try to keep backspacing the same as the factory wheels. Backspacing is the measure of the distance from the rim edge to the inside wheel flange. If you’re going with wheels one inch wider, add 1/2″ backspacing and 1/2″ to the offset on the front side. Mount a tyre and install one wheel to check for clearance issues before proceeding.
- Some 4WDs require a higher-profile tyre (one with a taller sidewall) along with larger diameter rims to fill the wheel wells and give the right look. You might have to have your speedometer recalibrated to make up for the difference in diameter in your tyre and wheel combo.
Selection and Installation Tips
When choosing your new 4×4 wheels, ensure that you have lug nuts of the correct length and that the seat of those lug nuts is right for the new wheel. When you tighten the lug nuts, check to see if they’re bottoming out before they’re fully tightened. Don’t forget to re-tighten the lug nuts after driving for a few miles, as they can loosen when the lugs and wheels seat themselves.
